Why does Crest need a new Gymnasium?

Currently, operating with a single gym presents multiple obstacles to the school day. The following are just a few examples:

  • During winter or severe weather, the elementary school utilizes the gym for indoor recess. This impedes the planned schedule of the P.E. teacher.
  • The middle school schedule is forced to have P.E. classes at the end of the day so that students practicing for sports can do so during this time. These schedule impairments must be worked around by all other district classes.
  • Use of the stage for music class or for school events impairs the schedule of P.E. classes.

This new gymnasium must be thought of as a classroom that allows for extra-curricular activities. Adding a new gymnasium allows for many improvements to the daily life of students and staff alike.

Will adding another gym allow my kids to get out of practice earlier?

Yes - the new gym will allow for both middle school and high school students to practice indoors simultaneously.

How big will the new gym be?

The new gym will encompass 8,000 square feet of space, just slightly larger than the current gym.

However, it will only seat ~350 patrons, while the current gym seats ~480. This is due to seating being one-sided with priority being given to the size of the floor, allowing for multiple volleyball games to be held at the same time.

“We aren’t the Royals, this is a need. This gym will be modest, and it will function primarily as the classroom we have long needed. The classroom is created by the walls, the nets and goals give it another purpose.” - Board Member Seth Black

Why is it being called an auxiliary gymnasium?

The current gym will remain the main varsity gym and will continue to serve its other purpose as an auditorium.

How will we enter the new gym?

A new entrance will be built to allow easy access to both gyms provided by a ramp. This new entry will feature two new restrooms, providing ADA restroom access to both gyms and solving a current problem.
